Many Hearts are heavy with grief as we come to terms with the unexpected passing of Don McGuire on Tuesday, September 14th. A pillar of our St. James community, Don leaves behind Craig and Shannon, devoted step-son and daughter-in-law; Cathy, Steve, Peter, and Claire, loving daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren; Murphy, loyal shih-tzu and constant companion, and a wealth of friends.
Don came to St. James in 2007 with Cheryl, his wife of thirteen years. Sadly, Cheryl died two years ago. Don's loss and loneliness was profound and eased only when he met Carol, a very special lady who had lost her husband around the same time Don lost his wife. Together, Don and Carol experienced a new found happiness few of us are blessed to enjoy. Those of us close to Don were heartened by the spring in his step, the light in his eyes, and the bright smile on his face.
Like all of us, Don brought to his retirement in St. James vast experience and wisdom from a full life well lived. Eager to give back, he joined our St. James Fire Department and became the President of its Board of Directors on January 8, 2019. Don proudly held this position with unwavering dedication and distinction until his untimely death. He was instrumental in the design and construction of our community's new fire station located in Seaside. A labor of love, Don oversaw every facet of the creation of this fine addition to St. James, from conception to its final fit and finish.
A devout communicant and parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic church in Southport, Don's faith was deep and abiding. A funeral mass will be held for him at Sacred Heart on Tuesday, September 28th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the St. James Fire Department in Don's memory.
