What is a "Vial of Life"?
The "Vial of Life" is a simple but potentially life-saving program. It provides emergency responders with quick access to your critical medical information — medications, allergies, medical conditions, and emergency contacts — when you may not be able to communicate.
The concept is straightforward: you fill out a medical information form, place it in a small container (the "vial"), and store it in a visible, standardized location in your home — typically the refrigerator. Emergency responders are trained to look for it there.
How It Works
- Complete the Vial of Life form with your current medications, allergies, medical history, physician contact, and emergency contacts.
- Place the completed form in a zip-lock bag or small container.
- Store it on the top shelf of your refrigerator door — the standard location responders check.
- Place the provided Vial of Life sticker on your front door or window so responders know to look for it.
- Update the form whenever your medications or medical information changes.
Who Should Use It
- Seniors living alone or with limited mobility.
- Anyone with chronic medical conditions, multiple medications, or known allergies.
- Individuals who may have difficulty communicating during a medical emergency.
- Anyone who wants to ensure responders have accurate information immediately.
Vial of Life forms are available at the St. James Fire Station, 3628 St. James Drive SE. You may also request one by emailing [email protected].
